Showerheads may harbour dangerous bacteria
A new study finds some showerheads have a dirty side and can deliver potentially dangerous bacteria along with the hot water meant to scrub you clean.

The surprising new study from the University of Colorado at Boulder finds that showerheads, particularly plastic ones, provide a dark, wet, and warm environment for bacteria to not just live but to grow.

Those potentially harmful microbes get sprayed out of the showerhead as an aerosol that people can inhale into their lungs, where it can lead to lung disease in some people.

The research team led by molecular biologist Prof. Norman Pace made their findings after analyzing more than four dozen showerheads in nine cities across the U.S.

They found a slimy "biofilm" inside many of the showerheads that harboured the DNA of a bacterium called Mycobacterium avium, or MBA for short.

"We found about 30 per cent of the showerheads had significant loads of MBA cells imbedded in film inside the showerhead, in the interior surfaces. So when you turn on the shower, some of them wash out," Pace explained to CTV News Continue»

Dr. Andy Simor says
there have been the occasional report of people becoming ill from NTM infections traced back to dirty showers, but he says he's not concerned a daily shower poses a huge public health risk. "Most people who are in good health are exposed to these bacteria all the time and it doesn't cause problems," Continue»

Mr. Michael Chiu Says

"the bacteria build up inside of shower heads do not pose a serious health problem for the general public. If people are still worried, they can get shower filters that are not only capable of filtering Chlorine and other Volatile Organic Compounds, but also inhibiting the growth of bacteria."
"Traditional shower filters only utilize activated carbon as the filtration media which is quite favorable for bacteria growth." Mr. Chiu continues. "However, the latest ones are mostly equipped with KDF (Kinetic Degradation Fluxion), a metallic compound of copper and zinc, which induces a redox reaction that will damage the cellular membrane of micro-biological organisms, thus inhibiting growth." Such filters can be conveniently installed by anyone, and an average family will only need to change the filter once a year, at a cost of only $40.

Q: I had recently seen people demonstrating live, by adding oil droplets to both water and Alkaline water, after stirring both glasses, the oil in the Alkaline water disappeared. Therefore, they claim Alkaline water carries the BAD Fat ( saturated fatty acids/oil) away from your body. It the scientific at all?

A: Alkaline solutions tend to hydrolyze oils, breaking them down into salts that are either soluble or can act as detergents. Sesame oil is mostly a mixture of fatty acids which become soluble in any solution that is even slightly alkaline. This, after all, is the way soap is made! But if the nonsense about dissolving the body's fat is true, it should attack the lipids in cell membranes, killing all the cells!

Issue: the concern about lead in Ontario’s drinking water gets extra force from a growing body of research linking blood lead levels in preschoolers and crime rates later in life.

RESULT: according to Rick Nevin's research, exposure to lead during the first few years after birth results in lower IQ scores later in life. This combines with other research that shows a strong association between low IQ and criminal behavior.

Issue: The Municipal Water Plant: - Water is filtered through sand to trap solid matter. Chlorine and other chemicals are added to kill bacteria and algae.

RESULT: The water is now considered safe to drink by current standards even though it may contain any number of potentially harmful chemicals. Also, it is not very economical and sometimes has an objectionable taste or odor. Ideally it should be given additional treatment as it enters the home and at your tap.

Issue: The well is inspected and tested by Health Department for disease causing bacteria. Most wells pass this test.

RESULT: The water is considered safe to drink by current standards even though it may contain any number of undesirable chemicals. Also, it is not very economical and sometimes has an objectionable taste or odor.
